Emergency Call Handler - Education

Entry Requirements

There are no set entry requirements to become an emergency call handler or medical dispatcher, but employers expect good literacy, numeracy, and IT skills. Some may ask for qualifications like GCSEs, NVQs, or equivalent. Relevant work experience, such as in a call center or customer service or healthcare role, is an advantage.

Skills You Need

You will need the following:

  • Values of the NHS Constitution
  • Stay calm under pressure - be able to cooperate with angry, really sad, etc. people and work well in a team
  • Good communication skills and good keyboard skills (fast typing)

Training

You need to be able to use their software and equipment comfortably and give good first aid telephone advice. You may also have the chance to do an apprenticeship.
